Good reception starts with a good conversation.
A natural-sounding AI receptionist that listens, checks the details and gives callers room to speak. In a voice you choose for your business.
The written example below shows how a call can unfold. To judge the voice itself, ask Talkify for a demonstration.
Test the receptionist. Not just the voice.
Use your own test number, made-up customer details and the same scenarios for every provider. Listen to the call, then check the actual booking or message. This scorecard records your observations; it does not listen to audio or test an agent automatically.
Ask “Who am I speaking with?” The agent should identify the business and be honest about being an assistant.
Give an unfamiliar name, correct its spelling, then correct one digit in a made-up callback number. Check the final summary.
Interrupt politely while it is speaking, then repeat a question with ordinary background noise. Check that it recovers without inventing details.
Ask for a price or service detail that is not in the supplied information. A good answer admits the limit and offers the agreed next step.
Request a time you know is unavailable. Inspect the calendar or booking link afterwards: was the outcome described accurately?
Ask for a person, then test with the transfer destination unavailable. The caller should hear what actually happened, not a claim that somebody accepted.
Give a request with a location, a corrected detail and a preferred callback time. Compare the delivered note with the conversation.
Ask for something the business does not offer. It should explain the boundary without making up a service or promising an exception.
How to use this well
- Record the exact question and observed outcome, not just an overall impression.
- A warm voice cannot compensate for a false booking or a missing callback number. Resolve those failures first.
- Repeat after changing the knowledge, prompt or integration. A previous pass is not permanent certification.

The voice
It sounds like it is from here
A New Zealand voice, not an American one reading a script about your business. You pick the voice before it goes live and you can change it later.
It waits for people to finish
It does not talk over the top of somebody thinking, and it does not leave the long dead pause that gives a machine away.
It says Māori names properly
Place names and personal names are pronounced the way they are said here, which is more than can be said for most call centres.
A call that does not go smoothly
Anyone can print a perfect call. This one has wind on the line, a word it cannot make out, a caller who asks whether it is real, and a question it is not allowed to answer.
Good afternoon, Tasman Auto. This is Jo. How can I help?
Yeah gidday, my car is making a noise, can I get it in this week
Heavy wind noise. About a third of the words did not arrive.
The line is a bit rough at your end. I got that your car is making a noise and you want it in this week. Have I got that right?
Yep. It is the something on the front left.
I did not catch the part you named and I do not want to write down the wrong thing. Shall I just put down a noise at the front left, and the team can have a look?
Did not guess. Offered a version it could stand behind.
Yeah do that. Hang on, am I talking to a real person here?
No, I am an assistant answering the phone for Tasman Auto. I can book you in and take your details. If you would rather speak to one of the team, I will put you through now.
Asked directly, answered directly. It never claims to be a person.
Nah you are alright. Book it in.
There is Tuesday at 8, or Wednesday at 1:30. Which suits?
Tuesday. And what is a cambelt going to run me on an 06 Legacy?
I am not able to put a price on that one, sorry. It depends what they find when it is up on the hoist. I have written the question down and Mereana will ring you back before five with a number.
Refused to invent a price. Named who would answer, and by when.
Sweet as. Thanks.
This call includes a rough line and a missed word. It shows the assistant checking what it heard, answering honestly about being AI, and passing on a price question it cannot answer.
Four chances to bluff, four refusals. That is the whole design. A receptionist who guesses is worse than no receptionist, because you do not find out until the customer turns up expecting something you never agreed to.
The awkward bits
Does AI receptionist software sound natural or robotic?
It should sound clear, unhurried and local rather than imitate a person. The voice waits for the caller to finish, asks again when a word is unclear and says plainly that it is an AI if asked. You choose the New Zealand voice and hear it handle your own calls before it goes live.
Does it announce that it is an AI before the caller asks?
Not by default, because opening every call with a disclaimer makes a small business sound like a bank. The moment anybody asks, it says so plainly and offers to put them through to a person.
If you would rather it declared itself in the greeting, that is a setting and we will turn it on.
What happens when it genuinely does not understand?
It asks again, once, in different words. If it still has not got it, it stops trying, tells the caller it has not understood, and either transfers them or books a callback. It does not loop.
What about a strong accent, or somebody who mumbles?
Usually fine, and where it is not, the behaviour above kicks in. It reads back what it thinks it heard before it writes anything down, which catches most of it.
Can it handle somebody who is upset?
It will not argue and it will not try to talk anyone round. It gets them to a person, or it gets a person to ring them, and it flags the call so you know it happened.
Can I change the way it talks?
Yes. The voice, the greeting, how formal it is, what it calls your services, and the exact wording of anything it says often. If it says something you do not like, you change it and the change is live on the next call.
Listen to it on your own business before anyone else does
The account opens instantly and your agent is deployed and trained within 24 hours. You hear it handle your calls first.
